Radical personal responsibility

The one thing that has been so profound in changing my thoughts to change my life is how radically responsible I need to be to create change.
I might want to say, “This person makes me angry,” but I now know that I make myself angry with how I think about the actions and words of others. I also know that when I blame others for situations in my life, I give my power to them.
To quote Louise Hay, “What we think about ourselves becomes the truth for us … Each one of us creates our experiences by our thoughts and our feelings … We create the situations, and then we give our power away by blaming the other person for our frustration. No person, no place, and no thing has any power over us, for ‘we’ are the only thinkers in it. When we create peace and harmony and balance our minds, we will find them in our lives.”
In her book You Can Heal Your Life, Hay adds this thought, “Which of these statements sounds like you? ‘People are out to get me.’ ‘Everyone is always helpful.’ Each one of these beliefs will create different experiences. What we believe about ourselves and about life becomes true for us.”
- If I believe I am too old to succeed at something, I will likely not succeed at it.
- If I believe all my financial problems stem from the government, I will likely not take charge of my debt and deal with it well.
- If I believe my parents (or boss, or spouse or…) are to blame for something in my life, I will likely not take responsible action to overcome the problem.
- If I believe I have to work like a dog and pay my dues to make it in this world, I will likely not think kindly of those who receive a financial windfall –including myself.
- If I believe my anger is justified because the other person was a jerk, I will likely not let go of my anger easily.
Ouch. Radical personal responsibility is tough stuff.
I still haven’t met anyone who can live by that. It seems like an ideal Captain Kirk would have us striving for…and the striving….is what makes us good humans…I can almost hear him saying something like that on an episode.
Personal responsibility…I personally believe that recognizing the need for it is half the battle won.
Each day we make decisions. I am learning to try to make smarter ones too.
