Feeling purposeful
Apr 1st, 2008 by spaceagesage
What should I do with my life? is a question we have all probably asked ourselves at one time or another. We long to follow our dreams, uncover our heart’s calling, march to the beat of our own drummer, and discover our gifts so we can use them fully.
We don’t want just a job; we want fulfillment.
According to Dr. Wayne Dyer, “You’ll feel the most on purpose when you’re giving your life away by serving others. When you are giving to others, to your planet, and to your Source, you’re being purposeful … When you’re in the service of others, or extend kindness beyond your own boundaries, you’ll feel connected to your Source.”
New York Times best selling author Po Bronson, who wrote What Should I Do With My Life?, documented a number of people who changed their lives in search of an answer to that very question. He writes: “They spoke of fulfillment, not happiness. Very often they found fulfillment in living up to their moral responsibility to society – in finding some way to feel they were helping others, or at least connect genuinely with others. In this sense, even though they were pursuing what they personally needed, they were learning selflessness.”
My most fulfilling moments are when I have taught something and I see eyes once unsure suddenly pop open with understanding, or even better, to see those eyes go deep into thought about the interconnectedness to previously taught information. By writing this blog, I don’t have the opportunity to see the reader’s face, but the comments and the off-line emails have been equally heartwarming.
“Life becomes harder for us when we live for others,
but it also becomes richer and happier.”
Albert Schweitzer
