One big moment when meaningless can be meaningful
Jun 11th, 2008 by spaceagesage
As I travel through various blogs, reading and scanning here and there, I see a very positive pattern of helpfulness, free advice, and how-tos about doing just about anything: better blogging, better writing, better websites, better habits, better health, better living, better sex, better relationships, better everything.
Self-improvement seems to be all the rage, and that’s good, because I blog about much the same. What I noticed today, however, is that the how tos seem … well … so “how toish.” Everyone is nice and kind and informative, but I’ve had a rough week so far, and all I want to know is how not to.
- I don’t want to know 14 ways to relax; I just want to movie binge.
- I don’t want to know 12 ways to have better relationships; I just want to avoid socializing right now.
- I don’t want to know 10 ways to love my husband better; I just want him to hold me.
- I don’t want to know 5 fast tracks to finishing my ebook; I just want to play hangman for awhile.
- I don’t want to know the best ways to build my blog; I just want to write one.
Self-improvement is great, but some days, you need to take a break even from that. When the moment of not wanting to do, or to be, or to improve anything passes, then I will want to read about these things again. Until then, I think I’ll take a nap.
How about you? Is it time to take a break and do something fairly meaningless for a bit? You know, just to let your hair down? You and I can always start up the meaningful stuff again tomorrow.
Welcome to un-blogging. Sometimes when you feel you have just been pressing forward too long in one direction it’s damn good to to just go the other direction, or even sit and watch it all go by you.
It must be working. I don’t even know you and here I am placing a comment, which makes you my newest un-friend. (Not to be confused with enemy – different cat, though a really evil antagonist is the best thing that ever happened to a really good protagonist.)
Give me un-blog or give me cancellation!
How to guides on the blogosphere drive me nuts! Sometimes I think I can’t stand another one. Then I stumble across something sweet, quirky, creative, sad and think… I’m glad I’m still reading.
Enjoy playing hangman 🙂

Robert — Yep, sometimes kickin’ back is good! “To blog or unblog, that is the question …”
Joanna — The Google Hangman, for my iGoogle page, is tough! Yes, I feel the same way about the how to lists. I had to laugh when I ran across one the other day, “How to see in the dark,” but it was actually quite interesting.
Oh such an awesome post! “Trying” all the time does get so tiring!
Cori — Thanks! Your comment reminds me of the saying, “Everything in moderation … including moderation.”
