Insecurity — the killer of a more abundant life
Jun 30th, 2008 by spaceagesage
I watched two different television spots this weekend on actor Will Smith, whose newest movie Hancock is out in theaters July 2. One interviewer said Smith is a man “who knows who he is and where he is going.” As I watched Smith in action, I noticed how his passion, drive, humor, creativity, and inclusive heart radiate outward to everyone he meets. If he is insecure, it certainly doesn’t show. It’s hard to imagine him even having a bad day.
- How can we get to be that secure of ourselves?
- How do we discover “who we are and where we are going?”
- How do we tap into and power up our talents, skills, attributes, strengths, and aptitudes?
In order to find calm confidence, inner strength, and driving passion, we have to first address our own insecurities. Insecurity tells us we are:
- Inadequate
- Helpless
- Incompetent
- Fearful
- Fearful that our deficiencies will be found out
- Out of touch
- Off-kilter
- Unsupported
- Unaccepted
- Disapproved of
- Rejected
- Falling short
- Unable to do what we dream of
This list screams one thing: “I’m not good enough.” Unable to shine forth on our own like a flower in bloom, we feel the weight of “what other people think.” It is a tough place to be.
In the next few posts, I will be exploring the topic of moving beyond insecurity. I know a bit about this subject. As a grade school student, I remember school photographers having to almost prop my chin up with a stick because I kept looking down out of insecurity and shyness. It was if I feared everything in the world, and by not looking life fully in the face, I could avoid the pain. (It didn’t work then, and it doesn’t work now.) As you can see from my About Writer Page, I have changed a bit since then.
In future posts, expect to learn more about overcoming insecurity with insights into its causes, manifestations, how we hide it from others, and how to bust free from it.
“I’m not insecure. I’ve been through way too much f**king sh*t to be insecure. I’ve got huge balls. But I’ve been humbled. That makes you grateful for every day you have.”
