Looking eye to eye
Oct 27th, 2008 by spaceagesage
I’m blessed to live in Colorado, where I’ve seen deer like this one my friend photographed, bears, eagles, and many other animals that live mostly free from human interference. Two questions today:
Have you ever held the gaze of a wild animal?
What do you see when nature — in any form — “looks you in the eye?”

Great picture! My favorite deer story was when I was taking a walk in Montana. A little deer came hop, hop, hopping down the trail towards me. When he finally saw me he didn’t miss a beat. He just made a 90-degree turn and hop, hop, hopped away into the bushes.
We have some land up in the mountains of NM, and one year the elk were so plentiful they would just look at us from the side of our dirt road as we slowly drove past. Occasionally one would be on the road and would look at us to be sure he/she really had to move out of the way. We worried a bit what would happen during hunting season if they moved off onto Forest Service land.
What a beautiful animal! I’ve never held the gaze of a wild animal, although I was staying in a house my father has up in the mountains, by myself, and a large monkey settled some meters away and watched me for a little while, before leaving. He was too far away to say that I gazed into his eyes though.
Hi Lori – How ironic. Earlier today we had a deer run through our front yard. It made me sad though as he was limping. I’ve never looked one in the eye, but when I see signs of nature (animals or other) I see beauty.
Hi Jean,
They are fast, agile, and amazing creatures, aren’t they?
Hi Marelisa,
Wow, a monkey who wanted to see what you were up to, eh? That must have been amazing.
Hi Barbara,
It is sad to see animals injured. It seems they are made so perfectly and beautifully that they shouldn’t have to endure trauma, especially when they can’t help themselves.
Hi Lori. How gorgeous is this little guy! I have held the gaze of an owl before. I was walking on a trail in the middle of the afternoon. I “happened” to look up and there was an owl sitting up in a tree, looking down at me. I stood there for at least 15 minutes, telling everyone who passed by to look. It was surreal in a way to look into that owl’s eyes.
Hi Davina,
Owls are amazing — so quiet and so very much “the watchers.”
