“The object of a new year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul.”
~G. K. Chesterton
This year will be filled with change like we’ve not seen in many years.
Not all of it will be good, but out of adversity comes strength, out of challenge comes ingenuity, and out of hard times come a deeper appreciation for what really matters. Not all of it will be bad, because so many of us are embracing change, learning to give, and finding our healthier selves.
It’s important to think every now and again about our lives as if we have only a few weeks or months to live.
Ask yourself: What would I change in my life if time suddenly became short and precious?
I plan to face this next year with that question more at the forefront of my thinking. No, I’m not dying of an illness or anything, but it’s time to shed some more old ways.
They say, fortune favors the brave. So may we all bravely and forthrightly face the dawn of a most amazing year.
May your 2009 ring in with truth, love, and a spirit of adventure!

Hi Lori: Fortune does favor the brave: you have to put yourself out there in order to reap the rewards! Have a wonderful 2009 Lori!
Hi Marelisa,
So true!
Best wishes for a great and grand 2009!
Hi Lori,
I’m looking forward to this. In fact, it’s something I have a hard time facing, myself…the thought of knowing my life’s end is near. Yet…it could be for any of us, at any time. And…we tend to go through life as though there’s always ‘next year’. Is there, though? And either way, isn’t fully living the way to go? …easier said than done…
Lori, I believe that 2009 will be the most interesting year that I have seen in my 65 years. Apart from the macro aspects of global finances, there are micro issues pertaining to my country India that will significantly alter the way Indians live and look at the world.
I too have to shed some unimportant things in my life and I intend going about it quite seriously.
I wish you a very happy year and success in your endeavors.
Hi Lance,
It is easier said than done, but also better tried than untried!
Hi Rummuser,
Thanks! Best wishes for your changing world in 2009.
Hi Lori. Happy New Year to you. If I knew my time was short and I was not ill, I’d stop worrying about saving money and I’d travel the world. There is so much to see out there.
Hi there Lori – I personally find it better to believe I have unlimited time on earth – that way I can be in touch with what my intuition is saying to do in the here and now. If I pretended I had only a few weeks or months to live, I might start doing things like traveling, or whatever, things I KNOW are not in my best interests at the moment – I would always be out of touch with myself, and therefore be always on the back foot.
Having said all that – I hope you have a great 2009!
Cheers – Robin
Hi Davina,
Hopefully this year you won’t have to worry about money and traveling will come to you serendipitously!
Hi Robin,
You always have an interesting look at things! Thanks for the added perspective. I guess the idea of “living like you are dying” is so those boxed in by limitations can free themselves of them for awhile — kind of like near-death experiences do for some people. In the end, though, living in the now is better practiced as a response to life, rather than an imposed mindset.
I just watched The Bucket List. The movie makes clear that life boils down to one important thing, the one thing that will make a difference after you die – relationships. Despite the cuss words (at least they are not gratuitous), I recommend the movie.
