Hello and welcome to the SpaceAgeSage blog! My name is Lori Hoeck, but I often write as SpaceAgeSage.
Forty-nine years on this planet and I have been blessed to see and do more than most women:
- I was born in Missouri, raised in Oklahoma and Colorado, and have traveled to six countries.
- I spent a summer in Oklahoma running a combine during the wheat harvest.
- I have rafted through category 5 whitewater and caught a hot-air balloon ride in the crisp Rocky Mountain air.
- I camped Survivorman-like for three days at 8,000 feet near Aspen, Colorado — for the fun of it.
- I took sailing lessons in Florida and spent a summer as a beach bum.
- I became certified as an EMT and spent 2 years as a volunteer firefighter.
- I witnessed a voodoo ceremony in Belize, hitchhiked in Mexico, and climbed the Mayan ruins of Tikal in Guatemala.
- I traveled alone through Mexico and parts of Central America just one year after graduating from college with a journalism degree.
- I earned my third degree black belt in tae kwon do and taught as a senior instructor in the martial arts for many years.
- I have heard coyotes howl, marveled at bald eagles plummeting downward for fish, and watched a wild mother bear and her cubs run through the underbrush.
My greatest love is my husband of 14 years. He is loving and lovable; caring and carefree; wild and wise. If he had an American Indian name, it would be “Laughing Heart.”
My earliest challenges in life were the deaths of my father and sister (happening 4 months apart), followed three years later by the death of my dear grandfather. All this before 3rd grade.
My life-long goal continues to be embracing wisdom…
…time for me to pass it on

SpaceAgeSage, I’ve always had respect for you and your accomplishments. Now that I’ve read the beginning of your journey, I look forward to new posts, and journey along with you.
“Laughing Heart” is a perfect name for your husband.
We are all lucky that you have such a blessed skill to write, so that as you share your journey, even the ugly parts are beautiful.
Thank you!
beautiful- on the inside and out. thank you for commenting on my blog so that I felt a need to check out yours. . . . . the midwest has its beauty too and perhaps I should spend some time writing about it as you have your home. . . . thanks again
About me: molested from age 6 to 13, Mother had Munchousen by Proxie, so I was near death on many occasions growing up. Married young. Carefully chose an abusive husband to fulfill my expectations. Live altering surgery to keep me alive after the effects of what my mother had done to me as a child.
Joined the fire department and, at the age of FIFTY, jumped the fence, ran for my life and married a man I should have married 30 years ago.
My love. My “laughing heart”. My wounded saviour.
dana – Cool about the firefighter in you! Glad you found your own “Laughing Heart” to help heal the earlier heart mauling. Sounds like you know both the dark side and the light side of life, and that you refuse to be a victim. That takes a lot of courage and strength. My hat’s off to you!
Hi Lori – No sure how I got here, but I felt compelled to leave a post. I was on Problogger doing some research on blogging about social networking and loved your handle so “click”
You have an amazing voice and song. I new you were a woman who had depth and had many years to hon your spirit voice.
I will be returning for a dose of wisdom.

The divine Mrs L — what kind words — thank you!
How amazingly cool it is to read about a person you have known your whole life, and find such delicious richness-of-self you suspected but didn’t know was there.
When I was young, Lori was the aunt that I couldn’t quite figure out. She had a way of holding my attention that was unlike any other adult I knew. She never softened or held back thoughts, opinions or expectations with me because I was a child. She was strong and clear; like the ever-flowing mountain streams where she lived – you never had a doubt where they were going or why.
As her husband is Laughing Heart, I think of Lori as the Song of Truth, or Song of the River. May we all sing our own songs of truth as clearly and undoubtedly as the rivers in these mountains our family holds dear.
Great blog, I like the cut of your jib! Keep up the good work.
Hi Lori – Thanks for the comments about my word usage (over on the “writetodone” blog). I’m apparently not always as careful in my blog writing as I should be!
After checking out your blog, I’m very much impressed by all the things you’ve done. I have a bumber sticker on my car that I think suits you better than it does me right now: “Destined to be an old woman with no regrets!”
🙂

Adeena —
I like that bumper sticker message!
Wow, what a life! So inspiring. I have backpacked through Mexico and Central America solo too (and once with hubby). Tikal is one of my favourite places on earth. Pure magic. Palenque too.
I like your life long goal – it’s mine too. Embrace wisdom and each other.
Nice getting to know more about you.
Kelly 🙂
Hi, Kelly —
You are a brave one indeed! I agree, there is something magical about Tikal. I loved hearing the howler monkeys and climbing the ruins. Thanks for taking the time to read the back story.
Hi Lori,
Life’s an adventure! And you sure are too…
Thanks for the inspiration!
Hi Lori,
I’ve been a silent admirer of your blog for awhile.
I’ve tagged you to share 6 random bits about yourself. This is a blog community project to enhance exposure to unique blogs and bloggers alike.
Here is my entry and how this project works: Six Random Things – A Blogging Community Project
Hi Avenefica,
Thank you for the kind words. I just dug around your “what’s your sign” site — really enjoyed the explanations of symbols from different cultures!
As for tagging, I appreciate the offer to divulge, and will do it here:
Six Random Things about me:
1) I read every Tarzan, Nancy Drew, and Hardy Boys book I could get my hands on in my younger years.
2) Sci Fi speaks to me — I can form my hand into the Vulcan greeting
3) I cook by smell (baking requires recipes however)
4) I nearly blew my foot off with a shotgun in my teens
5) My favorite story in the Bible is about Joseph and his brothers
6) I really, really like sushi
Hi Lori,
I have been looking through your blog and have enjoyed reading it- you have a nice writing style. …Then I read the post saying your last post – Doh!
I will watch out for your new ventures
Warmly, Marty
